Volkswagen pays homage to Polo GTI in South Africa with a special edition

Johannesburg, 10 April 2026 – Volkswagen has expanded the Polo model line-up with the introduction of the special-edition Polo GTI Edition 20. Only 400 units of the special edition will be available for sale in South Africa.

The Polo GTI Edition 20 commemorates two decades since the first Polo GTI was introduced in South Africa in 2006, marking another important chapter in Volkswagen’s hot hatch heritage.

The introduction of the special-edition Polo GTI Edition 20 also coincides with the significant milestone for the brand, as the Volkswagen Polo celebrated its 50th anniversary globally in 2025. In addition, Plant Kariega celebrates 30 years of Polo manufacturing in South Africa in 2026. Plant Kariega is the sole manufacturer of Polo GTI in the Volkswagen production network.

The 2006 Polo GTI (the second iteration internationally) featured a 1.8 litre turbo petrol engine delivering 110kW. In 2011, Volkswagen introduced the all-new Polo GTI powered by a twin charged 1.4 litre engine followed by the third-generation model offered with a 1.8 litre turbocharged TSI engine in 2015.

The continued popularity of the Polo GTI, highlights a strong market demand for a compact performance focused hatch, making a commemorative edition both timely and relevant.

GTI insignia in the interior. The interior of a Volkswagen GTI is just as characteristic and unmistakable as its exterior. Stylishly confident and expressive, but never obtrusive – the new Polo GTI Edition 20 is a perfect example. It features  a leather-wrapped multifunction sports steering wheel, Digital Cockpit Pro, Privacy glass from B-Pillar backwards including rear glass, Piano black dashboard, center console, door trim panel inserts, Dashboard decal with “20 GTI”, front mats with “20 GTI” embroidery and red stitching, rear floor mats, red binding stitch colour only (no embroidery) including sports leather seats with red vinyl. 

Distinctive exterior features. The exterior features of the Polo GTI Edition 20 include a black roof, 18-inch Faro alloy wheels (smoked clear on bright machined wheels), exterior mirror housing painted in black and includes front and rear door decals with “20”. The Polo GTI Edition 20 is available in Crystal Ice Blue Metallic, Kings Red Metallic and Ascot Grey exterior paint colours. For Crystal Ice Blue and Ascot Grey, the rear diffuser is painted in Kings red metallic.

The special edition is also equipped with optional features such as IQ.Light and NCAP Safety Package. The new Polo GTI Edition 20 is powered by a 2.0 TSI engine with 147kW power output. The engine has maximum torque of 320 Nm available from 1 500 – 4 350rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 237 km/h.

The Volkswagen Polo GTI Edition 20 comes standard with a 3 year/120 000 km warranty, 5 year / 90 000 km EasyDrive Service Plan including a 12-year anti corrosion warranty. The service interval is 15 000 km.
