Johannesburg, 29 July 2026 – The new Volkswagen Caravelle eHybrid is available for sale in South Africa.
Few vehicles in automotive history have earned the enduring affection and recognition of the Volkswagen Bus. For more than seven decades, it has transcended its role as a mode of transport to become a symbol of freedom, entrepreneurship, family and community.
From the original Type 2 Kombi that first rolled off the production line in 1950, through successive generations of the Transporter, Caravelle and Multivan, the Volkswagen Bus has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of society while remaining true to the qualities that made it an icon: versatility, durability, reliability and innovation.

For generations of South Africans, the Volkswagen Kombi was often the first vehicle that introduced families to the joy of road travel. The customer evaluation programme for the Volkswagen ID.4 provided valuable insights into charging behaviour, ownership expectations and the practical realities of electric mobility within South Africa.
Similarly, the ID. Buzz Cargo pilot programme demonstrated the operational potential of battery electric commercial vehicles within real-world fleet environments.
These programmes have helped shape Volkswagen Group Africa’s long-term New Energy Vehicle roadmap while reinforcing an important principle - successful electrification is not achieved simply by introducing new technology. It is achieved by ensuring that customers understand, trust and confidently embrace that technology.
The Caravelle eHybrid has therefore been developed as an important bridge between conventional internal combustion vehicles and future fully electric mobility. It introduces customers to the benefits of electrification in a way that feels familiar, practical and entirely uncompromising.
Charging for everyday life
Unlike a battery electric vehicle that relies entirely on external charging infrastructure, the Caravelle eHybrid has been engineered to provide customers with complete flexibility.
Owners can recharge the high-voltage battery at home, at the office or at one of South Africa’s growing networks of public charging stations, while always retaining the reassurance of the highly efficient petrol engine for longer journeys. This means that customers can confidently embrace electric driving without changing their lifestyle or planning every journey around charging availability.
For most owners, home charging will become the most convenient way to maximise the benefits of plug-in hybrid technology. By installing an approved AC Wallbox charger, the Caravelle eHybrid can simply be plugged in after the day’s activities, allowing the battery to recharge overnight while electricity demand is typically lower. The following morning, the vehicle is ready to begin the day with a fully charged battery, enabling many customers to complete their daily commute entirely on electric power.
In many respects, charging the Caravelle eHybrid becomes as effortless as charging a smartphone overnight. The Caravelle eHybrid comes with a 7.4 kW AC Wallbox home charger, providing a charging time of five and a half hours.The vehicle supports 11 kW AC charging, making it ideally suited to residential charging installations and destination charging facilities at offices, hotels and shopping centres. For longer journeys, the Caravelle eHybrid also supports 40 kW DC fast charging, enabling the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in as little as approximately 26 minutes under optimal conditions. This gives customers the flexibility to conveniently top up the battery during a coffee stop before continuing their journey.
As South Africa’s charging infrastructure continues to expand, Volkswagen Group Africa will continue working with strategic charging partners to provide customers with practical charging solutions, professional installation guidance and ongoing ownership support. For Volkswagen, introducing New Energy Vehicles extends beyond delivering innovative products, it is about building an ecosystem that enables customers to embrace electrified mobility with complete confidence.
Electrification without compromise
Central to the Caravelle eHybrid’s capability is its 19.7 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery, comprising 96 advanced prismatic cells that have been carefully integrated into the vehicle platform. This larger battery allows the Caravelle eHybrid to travel up to 95 kilometres in all-electric mode—more than sufficient for the daily driving requirements of many South African households.
When longer journeys are undertaken, the hybrid management system automatically transitions between electric propulsion, petrol power or a combination of both, to maximise efficiency while maintaining exceptional performance. Together, the two power sources provide a combined driving range of up to 700 kilometres, allowing customers to travel confidently between cities without concerns around charging availability.
Further enhancing efficiency is Volkswagen’s regenerative braking system, which converts kinetic energy generated during deceleration into electrical energy, continuously replenishing the high-voltage battery throughout normal driving.
Rather than allowing energy to be lost as heat during braking, the Caravelle eHybrid intelligently recovers and stores it for later use, extending electric driving capability while improving overall energy efficiency.

Why plug-in hybrid?
Electrification is often viewed as a single technology, yet New Energy Vehicles encompass a range of propulsion systems, each designed to meet different customer requirements.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) operate solely on electrical energy stored within a high-voltage battery and require external charging. They produce zero exhaust emissions and represent the ultimate destination of electrified mobility.
Conventional Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) combine a petrol engine with a small electric motor and battery that is charged through regenerative braking and the combustion engine. While hybrids improve fuel efficiency, they are unable to travel significant distances on electric power alone.
The Caravelle eHybrid introduces a third solution: the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV).
Designed to combine the strengths of both technologies, a plug-in hybrid enables the high-voltage battery to be recharged externally while retaining the flexibility of a highly efficient petrol engine.
This means customers can complete many of their everyday journeys using electric power alone, ideal for commuting, school runs or urban driving while continuing to enjoy unrestricted long-distance travel without the need to rely exclusively on public charging infrastructure.
For South African motorists, this offers a compelling balance between sustainability and practicality. It allows customers to embrace the benefits of electrification today while adapting naturally to the country’s evolving charging network.
Driving with all-wheel drive
The power distribution of the eHybrid 4MOTION system is regulated via Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and is variable depending on the drive situation or traction at the axles. This means up to 100 percent of the drive force can be directed to the front or rear axle. The electric rear-wheel drive is also available when the battery is empty: the power required for the electric drive motor on the rear axle is then automatically generated by the TSI engine and the front electric motor, which in this case acts as a generator. Permanent all-wheel drive is activated as soon as the driver switches from D to sport mode S or changes the ESC setting to Sport in the Individual driving profile such as when driving on wet surfaces. Here, the rear axle remains engaged up to a speed of 130 km/h.
Compared with a conventional all-wheel drive system, whose rear-axle drive relies on a mechanical connection to the combustion engine and thus on a propshaft, the Caravelle eHybrid features an electrically driven rear axle, enabling the vehicle to control torque distribution independently and with greater precision. This feature is a major advantage, as it allows for more power and traction as well as more dynamic torque control. The power distribution of the electrically driven rear axle can be ideally adapted, particularly on uneven surfaces. With this drive system, the vehicle can be driven entirely via the rear axle with spinning wheels on the front axle, for example this is possible only with a high level of design effort on conventional all-wheel drive vehicles. Traction is also positively influenced by the balanced weight distribution. This is due to the location of the battery (under the front seats), the tank (under the second row of seats) and the second electric drive motor integrated in the rear axle.
Engineering excellence at the core
At the heart of the Caravelle eHybrid lies Volkswagen’ latest-generation plug-in hybrid powertrain, an advanced engineering solution that has been designed to deliver exceptional performance, impressive efficiency and seamless integration between petrol and electric propulsion.
The system combines a newly developed 1.5-litre TSI evo2 turbocharged petrol engine, producing 130 kW and 250 Nm of torque, with a high-performance electric motor integrated into Volkswagen’s advanced six-speed DSG transmission. Together, these systems generate a combined output of 180 kW and 350 Nm, making the Caravelle eHybrid the most powerful production Caravelle ever offered in South Africa.
Unlike traditional hybrid systems, where the electric motor merely supplements the combustion engine, Volkswagen’s latest plug-in hybrid architecture enables both power sources to operate independently or together, depending on driving conditions.
During low-speed urban driving, the Caravelle eHybrid can operate entirely on electric power, delivering instant torque, near-silent operation and zero tailpipe emissions. As additional performance is required, the petrol engine seamlessly joins the electric motor, combining their outputs to provide smooth, effortless acceleration without any interruption in power delivery.
This intelligent collaboration between both propulsion systems takes place automatically, allowing the driver to focus entirely on the road ahead. Every second, sophisticated control software analyses vehicle speed, battery charge, driver inputs, road gradients and power demand to determine the most efficient operating mode.
The result is a driving experience that feels remarkably natural, combining the refinement of an electric vehicle with the unrestricted touring capability of a conventional combustion engine.
Premium standard features
The Caravelle eHybrid comes well-equipped with a range of premium comfort, convenience and driver assistance features. Standard features include three-zone Air Care Climatronic climate control with an additional rear passenger control panel, a Harman Kardon premium sound system with 13 speakers, 840 watts of output and a dedicated subwoofer, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles, and 30-colour ambient lighting, including second-row footwell illumination.
Advanced safety and driver assistance systems include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), IQ. LIGHT LED Matrix headlamps with Dynamic Light Assist and separate LED daytime running lights, a rear-view camera, Park Assist with front and rear Park Distance Control, as well as Side Assist with Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Traffic Alert and Exit Warning.
Convenience is enhanced by electrically operated left and right sliding doors with Easy Open and Easy Close functionality, a power-operated tailgate, and Keyless entry and start. Dark-tinted rear privacy glass further enhances passenger comfort and privacy. Completing the premium specification are 17-inch Dundrod alloy wheels.

The new Caravelle eHybrid comes standard with a 3-year /120 000 km manufacturer warranty and 5-year/ 100 000km Easy Drive maintenance plan including a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. The service interval is 15 000km. Battery warranty is 2 years unlimited or 8-year/160 000km.
