Yes, a chip causes damage to the top glass layer. Even small vibrations can cause a crack to form and spread across the entire windscreen.

It depends on the pattern of damage. If the chip is in the driver’s field of vision, less than 10 cm from the edge of the windscreen and larger than a two euro coin, it is not permitted to keep driving for safety reasons. If the chip is smaller and located outside of this area, you can continue driving. However, we recommend contacting your Volkswagen Partner for any type of chip so the damage can be rectified as soon as possible – for your safety and that of other road users.

In general, a chip can only be sealed if its diameter is less than 5 mm, it’s located at least 10 cm from the edge of the windscreen and is not in the driver’s field of vision. With more serious damages, the windscreen has to be replaced.
