National Circuit

Volkswagen Motorsport entered into the 2016 season with a completely new and exciting Global Touring Car Race Program, after the withdrawal from National Rally at the end of 2015. The new series has been challenging for the team, having to compete on tarmac predominantly as opposed to the usual dusty conditions out in the field, but has ended on a high note with very impressive results in both the GTC and GTC Production Classes.

2016 Sasol GTC Africa Series Overview:

Graeme Nathan and Mathew Hodges had a consistent year, in their VW Jetta Race cars with satisfying results. Considering the tough challenges in getting the cars built with quite a few technical delays for all the teams, Hodges ended up on the podium with a 3rd overall in the championship behind 2nd place Gennaro Bonafede (Sasol BMW) and the winner Michael Stephen in our sister brand (Engen Audi).

2016 Sasol GTC Production Class Overview:

Daniel Rowe and Mandla Mdakane competed this year in their Volkswagen Golf GTI‘s, and ended with impressive results! Rowe took the overall Championship after winning 11 out of the 14 races, two 2nd places and one 3rd place, taking a total of 14 podium places for all 14 races. Mdakane finished in 2nd place overall, also having taken 8 podium places of the 14 in total (four 3rd and four 2nd place positions).

Engen Volkswagen Cup:

VW Team driver, Kuda Vazhure, had a great season in his first year as our works team development driver. He finished in 13th place overall out of 23 talented and experienced drivers, and also took the ‘Most Improved Driver’ award as voted for by his fellow racing competitors.

Overall in the Championship, saw Chris Shorter take 1st Place, Bradley Liebenberg taking 2nd, and Keagan Masters in 3rd, all from the Signature Motorsport/Ferodo/Champion Team.

2017 VW Team: Driver Line up Announcement

Sasol GTC Africa: Mathew Hodges will continue into 2017 and will be joined by Daniel Rowe. Rowe, having won the Production Car class, has earned his spot to move up from the Golf GTI, to the Jetta. We are confident that this formidable pairing will be one to be watched very closely. Graeme Nathan will be leaving our team and we thank him for his dedication and loyalty.

Sasol GTC Production: Keagan Masters will fill the seat in one of the Golf GTI’s, together with Mandla Mdakane. Masters is a fast racer and proved to be very competitive in the Engen VW Cup. The GTC Production class will be very competitive in 2017.

Engen VW Cup: Kuda Vazhure will continue with the team in search of even better results and improvement this season. New comer Jonathan Mogotsi will enter into the team as the ‘new kid on the block’ having won the recent 2016 VW Driver search program.

Engen Volkswagen Cup

The series is entering its 21st year in 2017 – a milestone in our Motorsport history. It is still the biggest single entry for any National race meeting, and the fact that all the cars are identical, it sees close competition, clean racing and always very exciting to watch.

The formula offers various subsidized parts and sponsorships support to the competitors, which includes fuel and lubricants from Engen. The engine is owned and serviced annually by Volkswagen Motorsport and controlled by means of a lease system, with strict requirements to make use of the engine for fair competition.

It is also the most cost-effective racing category in the country, and we welcome all competitors interested in National level racing, who are between the ages of 15 and 27 years, to join this exciting formula. A Volkswagen Masters Cup has been formulated for competitors who are over the age of 27 years.

With prize money up for grabs this year this year, it is surely going to be a very exciting series for the competitors, with one clear goal in mind.....to win!

In order to race in this exciting series, a competitor must be a member of the Engen Volkswagen Cup Association, and hold a National Racing Licence.

Kuda Vazhure will be driving our Volkswagen Motorsport Junior program for another year, and teaming up with him will be Jonathan Mogotsi, the winner of the recent Volkswagen Driver Search. Together we are confident that Vazhure’s training from last year, and improvement of driving skills, will be put to the test again in this very close formula of competition.
