For the third consecutive year, Team Volkswagen won the Dakar Rally in 2011. Volkswagen remains the only manufacturer to win the Dakar Rally with a diesel-powered vehicle in the automobile class and the only manufacturer to win the event in South America. In 2011 and 2010, the Race Touareg claimed first, second and third positions - a clean sweep of the podium - leaving no room for the competition.
South Africa's very own rally driver, Giniel de Villiers, made international headlines in a Volkswagen Race Touareg by winning the 2009 Dakar Rally. The win marked the first ever victory of a diesel-powered vehicle in the automobile class in the 30-year-history of the Dakar Rally. Another South African, Ralph Pitchford, navigates for the same International Volkswagen Rally team alongside driver, Mark Miller. Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford followed right behind Giniel and his navigator, Dirk von Zitzewitz and completed the 2009 exploit with a one-two victory for Volkswagen, proving that there is no competition for the Race Touareg.
