Skills for the People

Skills for the people transforms into power to the people. With over 46 production plants around the globe, Volkswagen draws on its international pool of expertise, as well as its local education and training partners, to develop skills at home.

Volkswagen of South Africa has been at the forefront of skills development in the motor industry for many years. The company will invest some R400 million in training and skills development before 2010. The benefits will be felt by the company’s more than 6 000 employees, 45 000 people in the national Dealer network and over 1 000 people in the local community.

Volkswagen of South Africa has some ‘firsts’ to be proud of. The recent ‘firsts’ include starting the first Autotronic Learnership pilot in 2003 and being the first automotive manufacturer to start training multi-skilled artisans in 2004. The company proudly certified the first 47 multi-skilled artisans at the end of 2007 and to date approximately 1 500 artisans have been qualified and 193 people have undergone Learnership training. More than 1 100 apprentices, artisans and learners from other companies in the region have been trained.
